Chelsea have finally failed in their bid to resign Romelu Lukaku, a stone they once rejected, as Manchester United confirmed they have reached an agreement with Everton for the Belgian international.
Tweets from the Premier League club’s official account confirmed the deal. They read, “#MUFC is delighted to announce a fee has been agreed with Everton for the transfer of Romelu Lukaku, subject to a medical & personal terms.
“A further announcement will be made in due course.”
The deal will be worth an initial £75m, plus a further £15m of easily attainable add-ons linked to achievements and appearances.
The Red Devils value Wayne Rooney, who will move the other way as part of the deal, at around £10m, swelling the whole value of the deal on the table to nine figures.
Meanwhile, Lukaku has undergone a medical at the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, where he has been on holiday with his friend and future club-mate, Paul Pogba, the Guardian reports.
The Blues had matched Manchester United’s £75m bid for the Everton hitman, but it appears Lukaku had followed the wish of his agent, Mino Raiola who wanted him to go to United.
Chelsea had signed him from Anderlecht for £18m in August 2011 but later loaned him out to West Brom and Everton, who subsequently paid £20m for him in July 2014.
Interestingly it was Jose Mourinho who sorted him out while at Chelsea, which saw him leave Stamford Bridge.
