Manchester City are set to pay a world-record fee for a defender after agreeing a deal in excess of £50m with Tottenham for defender Kyle Walker.
The way is now clear for Walker, who helped Tottenham last season to finish second (their highest since 1960), to undergo a medical, SKY sources say.
If all goes well, he would become Pep Guardiola’s third summer signing who badly needs defenders after releasing Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta earlier this summer.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach has never hidden his admiration for Walker, who has been his main summer target.
Walker began his career at Sheffield United before moving over to Tottenham in 2009, where he had made over 200 appearances for the club.
Last season he made a total of 39 appearances for Spurs. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year for the second successive campaign.
Walker’s move to the Ethihad should be finalised by the weekend. And should that happen, Sheffield United would get a slice of the pie, having inserted a 10 per cent sell-on clause into the £9m deal when they sold Walker and Naughton to Spurs in 2009.
