The biggest conundrum of the President Muhammadu Buhari Government was dropped on Monday when his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said that he has no idea who is paying the medical bills of the president.
His principal has been in London since May 7, 2017 when he returned to the United Kingdom for urgent medical treatment. It is common knowledge that Mr. Buhari has been getting the best of medical care he failed to provide at home abroad at the expense of taxpayers.
In fact there is a widespread belief that he has refused to step down as president, despite his glaring incapacity, because he wants Nigeria to continue to pay for his expensive medical bills for an undisclosed ailment.
But Mr. Adesina claimed when he appeared on a Channels Television talk show, Politics Today, that he does not know who paid the medical bill of his boss.
Adesina said details of how payments for Mr. Buhari’s hospital bills are being paid for do not matter.
“Does it matter at this point?” he insincerely said in response to a question by the programme presenter.
“We need to know, he is our president. He is a public official. This shouldn’t be shrouded in secrecy,” the presenter, Seun Okinbaloye, replied.
“I do not know who is paying,” he said, “but as a president, he has a right to be treated by the country.”
When asked specifically whether Nigeria is paying the bill of his boss, he said: “Most likely. I don’t not know for sure.”
For a government that came to power promising change, Nigerians are shocked at its lack of transparency on the issue of Buhari’s illness. Up till now, Nigerians are yet to be told what illness the man they voted to take care of their country is diagnosed with.
