Real Madrid and Portugal attack machine, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been named UEFA player of season for 2016-2017. He also won the award last year.
The Portuguese beat from Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to claim the award for the third time overall.
Ronaldo scored 25 goals in La Liga last term, and 12 in 13 matches during Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning campaign.
An elated Ronaldo said: “The same (goals) every year, the same challenge – to win everything that’s possible with my club, with my national team. I’m so glad to be here, and honoured to win this trophy again. Thank you to my team-mates and congratulations to them too,” the forward said after receiving the award.
“For the national team, when I go there they always give me motivation to work hard and carry on every time. I’m so blessed – thanks also to the supporters of Real Madrid, everyone who helped me to achieve this trophy. Thank you – I’m so happy.”
Meanwhile, Buffon was named the goalkeeper of the season, Sergio Ramos the top defender, and Luka Modric the best midfielder, while Ronaldo was also named UEFA forward of the year, beating Paulo Dybala and, again, Messi for the award.
The Women’s Player of the Year was won by Lieke Martens of Barcelona, who edged Pernille Harder of Wolfsburg and Dzsenifer Marozsán of Lyon.
