The Government of President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to revoke the bail granted the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Namdi Kanu and send him back to prison.
The prosecution made this request, on behalf of the federal government, in an application it filed before the court, where the IPOB leader is being prosecuted along with others on treasonable felony charges.
Kanu has been duly notified of the application.
The application asking the court to revoke Kanu’s bail was released to newsmen in Abuja on Friday by the Special Assistant to the Attorney-General of the Federation on Media and Publicity, Mr. Salihu Isah.
The Federal Government filed the fresh motion seeking the revocation of Kanu’s bail on the grounds that the IPOB leader had flagrantly contravened the terms and conditions of the bail.
“Instead of using the opportunity of his bail to attend to his health needs, Kanu went ahead to inaugurate a security outfit known as the Biafra Security Service. This constituted a threat to national security,” the prosecution argued.
It also accused Kanu of allegedly inciting his followers “to disrupt, disallow and boycott elections in south East states, starting with Anambra State governorship election scheduled to hold on November 18, 2017, if the Federal Government failed to hold a referendum for the realisation of the state of Biafra nation.”
“Rather than observing all the conditions, the 1st defendant/respondent in flagrant disobedience to the court order flouted all conditions given by the court.
“The first defendant has in furtherance to the offence he was charged, inaugurated Biafra Security Service, ” the prosecution said.
“That the defendant held a rally at his residence in his hometown, Afara-UkwuIbeku in Umuahia, Abia State; the said rally with a CROWD exceeding 10 persons was captured in video published on the 1st June 2017 and circulated on YouTube.”
According to the Federal Government, the defendant’s separatist comments have increased rather than reduced.
Some of the statements allegedly made after he was granted bail include:
“I was not born to be rich, politician or scientist but to restore Biafra. I did not say we are restructuring Nigeria or implementing Aburi but restoring Biafra. That is the total exit of Biafra from Nigeria thereby restoring the kingdom of God on earth… There will be no elections.”
