The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday outlawed the Indigenous People of Biafra and its activities, declaring the group a terrorist organisation.
The Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdu Kafarati, gave the order as he granted in chambers the ex parte motion filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN).
Mr. Malami had sought the court’s order to proscribe the group under the Terrorism Act of 2011.
In granting his application, the court declared that the activities of IPOB in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East or South-South regions, henceforth, constituted “an act of terrorism.”
Before today’s ruling the Defence Headquarters and South East governors had unconstitutionally attempted to hang a terror tag on IPOB and to proscribe it respectively.
