The Senate of the University of Lagos has scandalously rusticated a female student, who recently shared a video of herself on social media, twerking to the statue of late former UNILAG VC, Professor Tunde Sofoluwe.
She was allegedly rusticated for four semesters for no apparent violation of the university regulations. Neither did she commit any crime known to Nigerian laws. Her only “offence” was enjoying her freedom of expression guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution.
The last time we checked, legal rights cannot be ascribed to a statue, so that she cannot be said to have infringed on the right of another. Also Prof. Sofoluwe, being a dead man, does not enjoy any personal rights recognized by law.
CHECKPOINTCHARLEY will encourage the suspended student to seek legal redress. The University of Lagos is a creation of law and is bound to follow established rules of laws and norms.
