Former Imo State Governor, Sam Onunaka Mbakwe of blessed memory was the last leader East of the Niger who knew what leadership is. He was never in two minds that leadership is all about service to the people.
Mbakwe served his people with all his heart and even wept openly when his people were neglected by the then Federal Government led by Alhaji Shehu Shagari, so much that he was nicknamed by his scorners “the weeping governor.
But it never mattered to him. He put his people first all through his years in power. And by the time he left office, Aba the Enyimba City (then in Imo State) became the shinning city in the East that teemed with flourishing people and boomed with business, thanks partly to the Ariaria International Market he built.
The city functioned and was on its way to becoming an international destination. Wide doubled lane roads and boulevards, with good drainage, were built and regularly cleaned. There was a modern refuse disposal system too, then ran by the SULO company. Aba was good and clean, just like Owerri that was the cleanest city in the whole of Nigeria.
But then came the locusts the military unleashed on Nigerians as democratic leaders. And the mindless looting began. In their foolishness and small-mindedness, they never thought about the future. And now Aba, due to their legendary greed and many years of mindless corruption, is a crumbling city, hanging precariously on a cliff.
In a video uploaded on Youtube, angry residents cry out for help, as they cursed the current Abia State governor Okezie Ikpeazu for doing nothing despite the obvious fact that Enyimba City is falling and the business of residents collapsing due to bad roads and floods caused by lack of drainage system.
