Three people have been confirmed dead following a Christmas clash between Hausa and Gwari youths in Bwari, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday.
The Minister of FCTA, Muhammad Bello, confirmed this to journalists on Monday evening.
According to him, after a closed-door meeting with stakeholders in the Area Council, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has imposed a 6 p.m.to 6 a.m. curfew on Bwari township.
The damages caused by the crisis are still being assessed, he added.
The clash was said to be as a result of the appointment of a new traditional ruler by the Gwari.
The Hausa youths were “angered” over the choice of the new traditional ruler and his designation as an emir.
A local resident told CHECKPOINTCHARLEY that the trouble started late last night after a Hausa man killed a Gbagi man. And in retaliation, Gbagis in the area burnt down the Bwari Market on Monday.
It is understood that there has been tension between Hausas and Gbagis in the area for quite some time.
The FCT police spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah confirmed the violence, adding that armed policemen had been deployed in the town to contain the crisis.
“The details of the incident is still sketchy, but our immediate objective is to contain the violence and ensure security of lives and property,” he said on the phone.
