Police Blow Cold After Blowing Hot, Says IBB Spokesman, Afegbua Not Under Arrest After He Turned Himself In

The Nigeria Police on Wednesday blew cold after blowing hot by declaring Kassim Afegbua, the media aide to former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, wanted over anti-Buhari statement he released on Sunday on behalf of the former leader.

The police backpedalled and told Afegbua, who was accompanied by his wife and his lawyer, Kayode Ajulo to the Force Headquarters, that he was not under arrest as they him after a short interrogation that lasted about two hours.

This may not be unconnected with public outcry over the attempt by the police to muzzle free speech.

Afegbua also later told journalists after he emerged from the interrogation that the police said he was not under arrest.

He said the police simply informed him that there was a mix-up in the statements he issued on behalf of the ex-dictator.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, had on Monday ordered Afegbua’s arrest for “making false statements, defamation of character, and for an act capable of inciting public disturbance.”
