The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday declared the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris persona non grata and “enemy of democracy” over his refusal to honour the summons of the upper legislative house.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki disclosed this after a closed door session, saying the lawmakers resolved to declare the IG persona non grata. Therefore, Mr. Idris is not fit to hold any public office in Nigeria or any other country.

This followed the persistent refusal of Mr. Idris to honour the Red Chamber’s invitations over the spate of killings across the country and the inhuman treatment of distinguished senator Dino Melaye over a matter that is pending before a competent law court.

Mr. Saraki pointed out that a court, which the Police boss approached over his earlier invitation by the Senate, had ‎ruled that the lawmakers had the powers to summon him or any other public officer.

Saraki said, “The Senate believed it was a gross disrespect to this institution and constituted authority. It also noted that the IGP’s refusal to appear before an investigative committee was overruled by a court of competent jurisdiction in April this year.

“The Senate, therefore, view this persistent refusal as a great danger to democracy. And so resolved that the IGP as an enemy of democracy is not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria.

“The leadership of the Senate was also mandated to look into the matter for further necessary action”.

On Wednesday, Idris again refused, for the third time, to honour the senate summons.
