In a massive rejection of the direction President Muhammadu Buhari is taking the country to, a total of 37 members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday announced their official defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This is coming barely hours after 15 APC senators decamped to the PDP.
The defection letter was read by Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House.
Some of the aggrieved lawmakers cited fictionalization and division in the party as their reason for their departure.
The details include 33 lawmakers from Kano, Sokoto, Kwara, Kogi and other states, who defected from the APC to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The four others are from Oyo State who defected from the APC to African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The announcement, however, threw the plenary into commotion with shouts of PDP, APC, Change, Sai Baba, etc, renting the air.
The Speaker failed in his attempt to restore normalcy to the House as both parties engage in shouting match.
Interestingly, neither the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, nor his deputy, Yusuff Lasun, was named among the defectors.
Despite the defections, unlike in the senate, the APC retained its majority leadership status – with comfortable 186 members, out of the total of 360.
However, with 32 reps joining the PDP, the party’s numerical strength moved from 130 to about 162.
The ADC got four members, while there is one member of APGA.
