The choice of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate was not made easier on Saturday when the Gombe state governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, declared his intention to contest the 2019 presidential election.
Mr. Dankwambo made the declaration at the Government house, Gombe, during a meeting with party officials led by PDP deputy national chairman, Babayo Gamawa, elders and delegates from the six states of the North-east zone.
He said he will run for presidency on the PDP, claiming that he accepted the call of the people across the country to run next year for the top post in order to “consolidate on the gains of democracy and save the country from hunger and starvation”.
The north east zone was long due for the presidency, the governor said, recalling that its last shot was the regime of late Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
The zone needs to present a candidate with a formidable track record of achievement in both security and economy, Dankwambo said, adding that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has failed Nigeria woefully.
