The Osun State Governor-elect, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, has received the certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his very controversial victory in the September governorship election.
Mr. Oyetola needed a rerun to defeat the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ademola Adeleke, who had won the main election declared by INEC as inconclusive.
He was given the certificate of return at the INEC office in Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Wednesday by the Director of Legal Services, Mr Oluwatoyin Babalola.
The head of legal had represented the Chairman of the commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu.
Oyetola commended the INEC and security agencies for doing a great job during the poll. However, the security agencies were widely accused of partiality during the election.
In any case, Oyetola said, “We will ensure that our programmes are people-friendly. The main focus of our administration will be the welfare of the people. I must not fail to recognise the governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for giving me the opportunity to serve. I have been a private person but the opportunity given me to serve in the public service was a great one.”
Oyetola’s controversial victory has been challenged at the Elections Tribunal by Mr. Adeleke.
