President Donald Trump on Wednesday finally fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Mr. Sessions submitted his letter of resignation to White House chief of staff John Kelly, in which the former senator made it clear that he is resigning because Trump asked him to to so.
Instead of elevating the deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosensstein, Mr. Matthew Whitaker, Sessions chief of staff, will take over as acting attorney general, the President said.
Whitaker is expected to take charge of the the Russia investigation and special counsel Robert Mueller from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
Trump tweeted, “We are pleased to announce that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice, will become our new Acting Attorney General of the United States. He will serve our Country well …We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well! A permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date.”
Sources at the White House told CNN that Sessions was humiliated out of office, as Trump asked his chief of staff to fire him, without the courtesy of formally informing him himself.
The source said Mr. Kelly simply told Sessions Wednesday morning that he should submit his resignation.
