The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to sell the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and retain only 10 per cent of the company for the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Mr. Abubakar said this in an interview with the monthly magazine, The African Report.
When asked if he would sell NNPC and keep 10 per cent shares for the government, he said, “Yes, I would want to go ahead. There is no doubt about that. The government should have a very minor shareholding. Nigeria is in dire need of funds to develop its infrastructure and other sectors of the economy.”
According to him, Nigeria should have been producing far more than two million barrels of oil per day and the NNPC ought to have become more profitable by now.
“But here we are, still at less than two million barrels per day.”
The PDP presidential candidate had presided over the National Council on Privatisation during his tenure as vice-president and majority of Nigeria see him as the better candidate when it comes to dealing with the economy.
