President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday confessed to state governors that the Nigerian economy is in a terrible shape.

The Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Abdulaziz Yari, disclosed this to State House correspondents in Abuja after he and his colleagues met with Mr. Buhari at the Presidential Villa after the National Economic Council meeting, which took place on Friday.

“The economy is in bad shape and that we have to come together, think and rethink on the way forward,” Yari quoted the president as saying.

The NGF had met Thursday night over the issue of a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers and then met on Friday with Mr Buhari to tell him their position on the matter.

With a bag of rice costing more than the proposed new minimum wage, Nigerians had been moaning about austere times before the presidential confession. Prior to that the Buhari government had refused to admit that times have been hard for Nigerians under Mr. Buhari’s watch.
