A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Adamu Muazu, who was accused of betraying his own party and the 2015 reelection bid of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has “strategically” met behind closed-door at Aso Villa, Abuja with Vice Presieent Yemi Osinbajo.
The meeting on Wednesday afternoon has fuelled speculation that Mr. Muazu is about to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Mr. Osinbajo had also attended the wedding of Muazu’s daughter in Bauchi at the weekend.
Wednesday’s meeting between the two men, held at the vice president’s office, lasted about two hours.
Mr. Muazu kept a tight lip after the meeting, declining to speak to State House reporters.
Recall that he had resigned as chairman of the former ruling party following the defeat of the PDP in the 2015 general election.
Mr. Jonathan, in the book, ‘Against the Run of Play’, accused Muazu of betraying him in the last presidential election.
He said, “I felt really betrayed by the result from some northern states. Perhaps for ethnic purposes, even security agents colluded with the opposition to come up with spurious results against me,” Jonathan said.
“What happened was very sad not for me as a person, but for our democracy. Take, for instance, the PDP national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu. I believe he joined in the conspiracy against me. For reasons best known to him, he helped to sabotage the election in favour of the opposition.”
Muazu had however denied the allegation.
