Nigeria’s Chief of Justice, Walter Onnoghen, will on Monday face a grotesque arraignment before Justice Danladi Umar of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, who was also accused of corruption by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) but never arraigned.
More bizarre is the fact that the nation’s chief judicial officer will be prosecuted by Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), the spokesman for the Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation, whose boss political fate may eventually be decided by the accused.
Mr. Onnoghen has been freakishly accused of failing to declare five bank accounts, in contravention of Section 15 (1) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, 2004.
The charges, CHECKPOINTCHARLEY gathered, were prepared by Keyamo, an EFCC prosecutor and a lawyer Justice Onnoghen had on 18 September 2017 decorated with the rank of senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN)
Recall that Justice Umar had been accused by the EFCC of collecting N10m from Rasheed Taiwo, a former officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, who had faced false assets declaration charges before the CCT in 2012.
The anti-graft agency had alleged that Mr. Umar received N1.8m of the N10m bribe sum through one of his personal assistants, Gambo Abdullahi.
Mr. Abdullahi has since been convicted, while Umar was charged but was never arraigned by the EFCC.
