Nigeria’s Court of Appeal has temporarily stopped the alleged plan of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to removed the Chief Justice of the Federation, Walter Onnoghen (CJN) from office, ahead of the 2019 elections, barring on Thursday the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) from proceeding with infamous hearing in the false assets declaration filed against the CJN.
A three-man panel of the court in Abuja granted the interim order pending ruling on the CJN’s application for stay of proceedings.
This decision is a blow to the alleged plot by the government to replace Mr. Onnoghen with a friendly CJN in preparation for the fall-outs of the elections, with the opposition accusing the ruling party of planning to rig.
