The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nnia Nwodo has alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari’s loyalist, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State called him an idiot in a phone call over the endorsement of presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar by the Igbo highest decision making body.
Despite the whole of the South East routing for Atiku, Mr. Obiano had vowed to deliver Anambra state to President Muhammadu Buhari in the presidential election.
Details of the vituperative phone call from the governor has been buzzing in the social media, with Mr. Nwodo saying he had decided to go public over the matter “so that Igbo would know who is idiot between him and Obiano.
Many watchers believe that Mr. Obiano is one of the South-East governors, opposing the Atiku presidential bid purely for selfish reasons. It is alleged they fear that if Atiku wins, it would put former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi in pole position of becoming the first Igbo president in 2023.
According to that school of thought, Mr. Obiano and Co are supporting Buhari against the wishes of their people and party, hoping to get the president to back them for president in 2023 should he remain in power.
Be that as it may, Nwodo wrote about the phone encounter, “Your Excellency Gov Obiano, I was surprised to receive a call from you a few minutes ago in which you said the following words ‘Nnia, I didn’t know that you were so idiotic’.
“I am shocked that you can be so insolent.
“I am sure that I was neither so idiotic when I addressed your state assembly asking Ndi Anambra to disregard IPOB’s boycott of your election nor was I idiotic when I pleaded with the Commander-in-Chief to restore your security detail.
“History will judge who amongst us is idiotic. If standing with the popular wish of Ndigbo makes me idiotic, I am happy to be called an idiot.
“I will make this communication public so that Igbo will know who is idiotic amongst both of us.”
