The National Judicial Council (NJC) has failed to reach a decision over the fate of suspended Chief Justice of the Federation, Walter Onnoghen, issuing him rather a fresh query.
The NJC took the decision after its meeting in Abuja on Monday, asking Onnoghen to respond to the query within seven working days.
The new query is in reaction to the petition sent to the council by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to a statement issued by NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, the council will reconvene on Wednesday.
It may therefore mean that the case against acting CJN, Tanko Mohammed may be decided on that day
Mr Muhammad is facing allegations of misconduct for allowing himself to be sworn in as Onnoghen’s replacement when he should have known that the CJN’s suspension by President Buhari violated the constitution.
Mr. Oye said in the statement that the NJC resolved to constitute into the Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committee in accordance with Regulation 17 of the National Judicial Council Judicial Discipline Regulations, 2017.
He said, “Council also received a new petition written by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Hon. Mr. Justice W.S.N. Onnoghen, GCON and forwarded it to him for his response within seven (7) working days.
“Council reaffirmed its confidence in Hon. Mr. Justice Umaru Abdullahi, CON and continues under his Interim Chairmanship.”
