Mr. Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has pushed back calls for his resignation following the postponement of the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections, saying there is no reason “whatsoever” to step down.

Yakubu said this at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, noting that he has been doing his best in his service to the nation.

He said, “There is no reason whatsoever to resign. No reason to even contemplate that.”

The INEC chairman also dismissed the call by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for reshuffle of residents electoral commissioners (RECs), saying such was not possible on the eve of the elections.

Recall that APC chairman, Adams Oshiomhole had called for Mr. Yakubu’s resignation, alleging that he was working for the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
