
More than six persons were reportedly shot to death by soldiers in Abonnema, Akoku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State during Saturday’s election in Rivers State as gunmen, suspected to be political thugs, engaged soldiers in a gun duel.
The Rivers State Police Command also confirmed the killing of a soldier during the shootout.
Police Public Relations Office could not give details of how the soldier was killed, but Punch reports that gunmen, suspected to be political thugs, shot and killed the soldier.
Two civilians were seriously injured during the shootout, the report said.
But a source told the newspaper that soldiers killed over six persons, which forced hundreds of indigenes of the area to scamper for safety.
