A high court in Ondo state has sentenced Saidu Adeyemi to death for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Adenike Oluboyo, daughter of Lasisi Oluboyo, former deputy governor of the state.
The body of Oluboyo, a final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, had been found at the residence of Adeyemi in July 2018.
Adeyemi was accused of burying her in a shallow grave in his room for five days after “killing” her.
He was reportedly exposed by his father who had called the police.
The accused had claimed at his trial for murder that he was not the killer of the deceased, saying she brought two boys into his room, who eventually killed her.
According to him, he was asked to bring a digger and a shovel to dig the floor of his room and bury her.
But delivering his judgment, Justice Samuel Bola held that it was established, through the autopsy report, that the deceased did not die a natural death.
He said the court did not believe the defendant’s claim that two men killed Adenike, noting that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that the deceased was intentionally killed by the defendant.
The judge therefore sentenced Adeyemi to death by hanging.
