Aisha, wife of president Muhammadu Buhari, has made an audacious demand to be addressed as first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria henceforth, damning her husband’s campaign promise and how he feels about her declaration.
Mr. Buhari had promised during the 2015 campaign to scrap the office of the first lady which he had said was unconstitutional.
But weeks into her husband’s second tenure as president, Aisha, speaking at a ceremony for wives of governors in Abuja on Thursday, demanded to be addressed as first lady, with the order that it should take immediate effect, despite the president’s reservation for the office.
She said, “The title wife of the president has been causing confusion among governors’ wives and that has to be resolved.
“When my husband was elected newly, I personally chose to be called the wife of the president.
“But I realised that it was causing confusion from the state as to whether the wives of state governors are to be addressed as the first ladies or wives of the governors.
“So, forgive me for confusing you from the beginning, but now I choose to be called the first lady.”
Juxtapose this with what she said in 2014, during the inaugural meeting of the APC women presidential campaign, “If the office of the first lady is constitutionally recognised, he will not tamper with it; but if it is not, that’s okay. For me, I will perform my duties and role as the wife of the president of Nigeria traditionally,” Aisha had said.
As at the time of filing this report, it was yet unclear if she has the nod of her husband on the matter.
In 2016, president Buhari, said during a press conference with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel in Berlin that his wife, Aisha belongs to the kitchen and the other room.
