Nigeria’s biggest name in constitutional law, Ben Nwabueze, appeared as the lead counsel of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), at the tribunal on Thursday as the petitioners started calling their witnesses at the presidential election petition tribunal in Abuja on Thursday.
Prof. Nwabueze, an unrivalled authority on Constitutional law in the country, was wheeled into the courtroom and he appealed to the court to be allowed to be seated while addressing the bench. His request was granted.
Interestingly he struggled to announce the names of the lawyers in his team, but Mr. Livy Uzoukwu, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who had been the lead counsel, rescued him.
Nwabueze later told the tribunal that despite his age, he attended the proceedings to show the importance of the case, saying the outcome of the tribunal will have an impact on future elections.
