United States House of Representatives has just impeached President Donald J Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress for stonewalling legislative oversight looking into his asking Ukraine to allegedly intervene in the 2020 US Election.
Mr. Trump had been accused of pressurizing Ukraine by withholding millions of dollars crucial aid until it announced it is investigating former US vice president, Joe Biden, a political adversary of Trump and his likely challenger in the 2020 presidential election.
By a 230 to 197 vote in the Democratic-majority House, the 45th US president becomes just the third occupant of the White House in American political history to be impeached after Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. But he became the first president to be impeached during his first term.
The vote on Wednesday to indict Trump now sets up a trial in the Senate in January, where the Republicans have the majority. It is unlikely that Trump would be removed from office but this impeachment will follow him his whole political life and remain a stain on the legacy of a man with a big ego.
The House vote came four months after a whistleblower blew open the scandal of Trump’s attempt to use the power of his office for personal gain – influence the 2020 election in his favour.
