The High Court Abuja has granted permission to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to detain former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, for 14 days.

Justice Othman Musa granted the request following an ex parte application by the EFCC’s lawyer, Fatima Mustapha, on Friday.

EFCC had told the court that it needed to detain the ex-AGF was to enable the commission to complete its investigations of allegations involving the suspect.

Adoke, who was charged with $1.1bn Malabu Oil scam in 20116, returned to the country on Thursday, ending his over four years old self-exile.

He was immediately arrested on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja by operatives of the International Police Organisation and handed over to the EFCC.

Adoke had been arrested and detained by the INTERPOL in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates in November but was allowed to return to Nigeria on Thursday following agreement with INTERPOL and Dubai authorities.
