Owerri, the Imo State capital was on Sunday grounded as thousands of Imolites stormed the streets to protest against what they called “judicial coup” unleashed on them by the Nigerian Supreme Court.
The Supreme court had on Tuesday annulled the electoral victory of Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and replaced him with Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as governor.
That decision has not gone down with Imo people, who have accused the apex court of imposing Uzodinma, who came a distant fourth in the 2019 governorship election, on them.
They are demanding a reversal of he decision, saying it was Ihedioha they voted for and not Hope Uzodinma.
There were similar protests in Taraba, Abia and Ogun states, urging the apex court to reverse itself and declare Ihedioha the winner.
In Owerri, the protesters marched from the Okigwe road party secretariat to the front of Imo government house and returned back to the secretariat.
The carried placards with the inscription, “CJN must step down”, “reverse the injustice now” “Imo wants Ihedioha”, “Say no to Supreme Court injustice Ihedioha” “#Ihedioha Spring” etc.
