The Nigerian Supreme Court came under more pressure to review its controversial Imo Judgement on Tuesday when Nigerians, under the auspices of Coalition for Defence of Democracy in Nigeria (CDDN), protested peacefully at both the Nigerian Consulate and the United States Embassy in Johannesburg over “the brazen rape of democracy by the Highest Court in Nigeria”.
The placard carrying protesters were at both missions to register their displeasure over the sacking of Emeka Ihedioha as the governor of Imo State by the apex court on January 14.
In a press release before the demonstration signed by CDDN coordinators, the group accused the Supreme Court of “criminally robbing the winner of a gubernatorial election in the South Eastern Nigerian State of Imo and awarding the 4th runner up from the ruling APC party as legitimate winner of the elections.”
The statement added that “this absurd ruling has caused so much problems and outrage in Nigeria and beyond .
“Hence the indigenes of Imo State want to put the Nigerian and International public on notice that it is the wish of Imo state indigenes at home and globally that the dubious ruling be reviewed and our rightful Governor who was voted my majority of our people (Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha) be restored back to office.”
One of the coordinators, Barrister John Unachukwu told CHECKPOINTCHARLEY that the coalition will continue to march until Ihedioha’s mandate is restored.
This was also re-echoed by the leader of the placard carrying protesters, who said, using the microphone, that it was a shame that the Supreme Court awarded votes to a candidate (Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress) who “failed” during the March 9, 2019 Imo governorship election.
The apex court had come under immense fire since that January 14 decision, with majority of Nigerians, lawyers and civil societies calling for a review.
Mr. Ihedioha is expected to seek a review of the decision that has sparked protests across the nation and globally.
