INEC Deregisters 74 Parties, Fixes Dates For Ondo & Edo Guber Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has deregistered 74 political parties in Nigeria.

INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, announced this in a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, saying they were deregistered for failing to meet certain criteria stipulated by the constitution during the elections.

The INEC chairman said the number of Nigeria’s political parties are now 18.

The 18 parties that scaled INEC’s hurdle are Accord Party, Action Alliance, African Action Congress, African Democratic Congress, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance and Allied Peoples Movement.

Others are Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, National Rescue Movement, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressives Party, and Zenith Labour Party.

Mr. Yakubu  also announced that the Edo governorship election will hold on September 19 while October 10 has been fixed for the of Ondo.
