The people of Imo State on Wednesday again took to the streets of Owerri to protest against the sack of governor Emeka Ihedioha in an absurd January 14 judgement that triggered unprecedented controversy and protests since the establishment of the apex court in 1963.
Legal scholars and civil societies had described the decision, which they say is not grounded both in law and commonsense, as “judicial coup”, “disenfranchisement of Imolites”, “absurd” “flawed” etc.
In that judgment, the supreme court sacked Mr. Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and replaced him with Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who came a distant fourth in the March 9, 2019 Imo governorship election and who the same court had refused to recognize as the legitimate governorship flag bearer of the APC.
Nigerian music star, Charley Boy and some Nollywood actors like Charles Awurum participated in Wednesday’s protest, as Imolites continue to resist what some have described as imposition of Mr. Uzodinma on them as governor.
The protesters are demanding a review of the supreme court decision.
