Oyo State has recorded its first COVID-19 death, Governor Seyi Makinde tweeted on Wednesday evening.

This comes just as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced one new case in the state bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 17.

Makinde said the patient died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, before the outcome of his confirmation test for the disease.

According to him, the state has commenced tracing contacts of the deceased.

He urged people who have come into contact with any COVID-19 case in the state, those who returned to the country from overseas within the last month, those with respiratory symptoms, to go for a test at the state walk-in coronavirus test centre.

He added, “Please, keep following the directives of the Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force. Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, regularly. Also, continue to maintain social distancing. Gatherings in Oyo State are limited to a maximum of ten persons.”
