An Onitsha high court has ordered the Nigeria Police to pay Mr Ogbonnaya Obasi, a lawyer based in Onitsha, Anambra State, the sum of N25m as damages for torture, in contravention of his fundamental rights.
Justice Theophifine Oguji gave the order on Monday, ordering the police to also tender an apology to the lawyer in a national daily.
Obasi had gone to court after he was brutalized by some police operatives attached to the Onitsha Area Command in October, 2019.
The lawyer had on the fateful day interceded in the torture of a citizen, urging the police to stop beating the man.
Instead of yielding to his pleas, the policemen turned round and descended on the lawyer.
The respondents, Emeka Ebo, Yakubu Aboh, John Agbaka, the Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of Police were absent in court.
