The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem as the President of the Court of Appeal.
She was confirmed on Thursday after a report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.
Mr. Bamidele had reported that no petition was received against her nomination.
“The nominee is a fit and proper person for appointment as the President of the Court of Appeal. The Committee recommends that the Senate do confirm the nomination of Hon. Justice M.B. Dongban-Mensem as Honourable President of the Court of Appeal,” he was quoted as saying on the Senate’s Twitter handle.
President Muhammadu Buhari had finally in a letter on Monday urged the Senate to approve the nomination of Justice Dongban-Mensem as the PCA.
Despite been recommended by the National Judicial Commission (NJC), Mrs. Dongban-Mensem was left in an acting capacity for a long time, which did not go down well with some sections of the country. They accused the president of not confirming her because of her ethnicity and religion. The presidency had denied the allegation, saying the delay was due to the fact that the security agencies were still running a security check on her.
