A representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, Ilhan Omar, says she is drawing up articles of impeachment against US President Donald Trump.
She made this known in a tweet on Wednesday after Trump’s supporters invaded the US capitol and disrupted the Congress certification of Democrat Joe Biden victory.
Omar tweeted, “I am drawing up Articles of Impeachment.
“Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate.
“We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath.”
Trump was in December 2019 impeached by the House of Representatives but Republican-majority Senate voted to acquit him in February 2020.
Omar also said the lawmakers would resume the joint session tonight to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win.
“Rest assured, this day will not end without us finishing the work Congress is supposed to carry out. We will not let our Constitution be trampled on by a mob and threatened by a tyrant. Democracy will prevail,” she added.
