Seven family members in Benue State have been killed and butchered like animals by suspected herdsmen, Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals, Mr Bernard Unenge told journalists.
The gunmen had invaded Mbamondu community at the outskirts of Makurdi, the State capital in the early hours of Saturday, a survivor of the attack narrated.
He told the Commissioner that the attackers also inflicted various degrees of injuries on five others with three in critical condition being treated at a medical facility in Makurdi.
According to him, the attack was unprovoked.
On getting the report, Mr. Unenge said he had to call security operatives that were stationed around the Adaka community, who responded swiftly. But before the military got there, the assailants had already fled after accomplishing their mission.
The commissioner said seven dead bodies were recovered and deposited at the Federal Medical Centre Makurdi, while five persons were also injured with three in very critical condition.
He described the incident as heart wrenching, saying his people were shot and butchered like animals.
