Nigeria Govt Suspends ChannelsTV Programme For Interviewing IPOB Leader

NBC Acting Director-General, Armstrong Idachaba

The federal government, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has sanctioned a leading media outfit in Nigeria, Channels Television for interviewing a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Emma Powerful on Sunday.

The commission ordered an immediate stoppage of one of its programmes, ‘Politics Today’.

The NBC also announced a fine N5 million for breach of the broadcast code.

NBC Acting Director-General, Armstrong Idachaba, in a letter on Monday, complained about the Channels 7pm live broadcast programme of Sunday, April 25, 2021.

NBC told the Managing Director of Channels TV that the TV station erred by allowing a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to make secessionist and inciting declarations without caution.

The regulator accused the news channel of allowing the guest speaker to make derogatory, false and misleading statements about the Nigerian army, despite being proscribed by a court of law.
