President Tinubu Sacks CBN Governor Emefiele

President Bola Tinubu has suspended Godwin Emefiele as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor with immediate effect.

“This is a sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy,  a statement on Friday by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey said.

“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) [Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi], who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.”

This is coming less than two weeks after President Tinubu assumed office and months after the CBN’s controversial naira swap, which had saw some APC-controlled states drag the government of former President Muhammadu Buhari to the Supreme Court.

Unconfirmed reports on Friday said that operatives of the Department of State Services had arrested the suspended CBN governor. But the spokesman for the DSS, Peter Afunaya, was unable to confirm the arrest when contacted.

Emefiele was appointed the apex bank’s governor on June 4, 2014.
