Women’s World Cup: Nigeria Beat Australia 3-2 To Top Group B

The Super Falcons have defeated co-hosts Australia 3-2 in a world cup group match played at the Brisbane Stadium on Thursday.

Australia had taken the lead through Emily van Egmond but Nigeria equalised just before half time, before goals from Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala wrecked the hosts.

Alanna Kennedy however brought a flicker of hope in the dying minutes of the game when she scored Australia’s second goal. But the damage seemed irredeemable as the Super Falcons held on to make sure their opponents did not get a point.

It was the Super Falcons first win in the ongoing competition and their fifth win in the history of the Women’s World Cup.

They had played a goaless draw in their first match against Olympic champions Canada, who beat Ireland 2-1 on Wednesday.

The Super Falcon face Ireland in their next group match but are looking good to reach the round of 16 after today’s win against Australia.

Nigeria now tops Group B, leaving Australia behind second-placed Canada ahead of their decisive match in Melbourne on Monday.
