The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Ola Olukoyede as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after a hasty screening despite issues raised about his eligibility for the job.
Recall that there had been opposition to Olukoyede’s appointment by President Bola Tinubu because they say though he served as the chief of staff to the chairman of the EFCC and secretary to the commission at various times between 2016 and 2020, he does not possess the 15 years cognate experience required in section 2(a)(ii) of EFCC establishment law.
The senate also confirmed the appointment of Muhammad Hammajoda as the Secretary of the anti-graft agency.
The confirmation of both men followed their screening by the upper chamber on Wednesday afternoon.
Olukoyede’s assumption as the new EFCC boss comes nearly four months after Tinubu suspended the erstwhile chairman of the anti-graft agency, Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa.
Mr. Bawa is still being detained by Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services.
