Lagos State Govt Intensifies Clampdown On Markets Dominated By Igbos, Seals Off Alaba Int’l

The Lagos State Government has sealed off the popular Alaba International Market as it intensifies its clampdown, dominated mainly by Igbos.

However, the government said the markets were sealed over poor environmental sanitation.

Alaba market’s shutdown followed the closure of several other markets in the state in recent times by the Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the shutdown of Alaba early on Monday on his X handle (formerly Twitter).

He wrote, “Alaba International Market, Ojo has been sealed up for poor waste disposal practices, failure to pay their waste bills and gross environmental sanitation offences.”

CHECKPOINTCHARLEY gathered that the Alaba market was closed without any form of prior notice.

Traders, who arrived on Monday morning at the market, were shocked to see that their access had been denied by officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA.
