The undemocratic battle for the political soul of Rivers State got messier on Monday as police operatives fired shots, teargas and water at Governor Siminalaye Fubara and his entorurage, as they walked on Moscow Road Port Harcourt towards the House of Assembly Complex, which was set on fire on Sunday night, reportedly to prevent the impeachment of Fubara by lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital territory, Abuja.
Governor Fubara had arrived at the Assembly complex with dozens of his supporters amid reports that the lawmakers were set to commence impeachment proceedings against him.
However, the governor visited the complex to assess the extent of damages done in the aftermath of the bombing of the State House of Assembly by some hoodlums.
The governor, who later addressed thousands of youths at the Government House gate, alleged that there was an assassination attempt on him by “some compromised police officers”, who he said shot fire live bullets at him with the intention to kill.
“From what I have seen, even the security is compromised because they were shooting at me directly. The DC operations was shooting at me.”
He described as null and void the attempt to impeach him by the lawmakers, noting that it was an illegal legislative action.
The governor commended the youths for standing up to protect the interest of Rivers State and said he is not scared about impeachment but such action had to be properly explained and justified.
It is gathered that Fubara had fallen out with his political godfather, Wike. And after he stopped doing his biddings, Wike, who has had an iron-grip on the state for over eight years, now wants Fubara removed as governor.
Meanwhile, the state Assembly on Monday reportedly signed an impeachment notice on Governor Fubara.
This was done in a session that was presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Martins Amaewhule and attended by a good number of members, the Leader of the House, Hon Edison Ehie and those loyal to the governor were suspended.
