13 Nigerian Youths Seeking To Earn A Living Killed As Mine Collapses In Plateau

No fewer than 13 people were killed when a mining site collapsed in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, northcentral Nigeria.

Dr Joshua Riti, the Chairman of the LGA, confirmed this to newsmen on Monday in Jos, saying the victims were aged between 18 and 30, and belonged to the Bassa Local Government Area.

According to him, the collapse occurred on Saturday at the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North Local Government Areas, where these unemployed youths sought to earn a living in the mining pit,

“This is an unfortunate incident, these young people were only out in search of a means of livelihood.

“They went out to put their energies to good use to sustain and meet up with the current economic hardship in the country but met their untimely death.

“I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” Riti said.

Recall that recently, 22 miners died when a mining pit collapsed at an illegal site located within a national game reserve that spans the Gashaka Local Government Area in Taraba State and the Toungo Local Government Area in Adamawa State.
