Amid groundswell of rumours, ex-Minister of Information and PDP chieftain Prof Jerry Gana has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan will contest the 2027 presidential election on the party’s platform.
There had been speculations of the former president’s intention to run again in 2027.
He was defeated in the 2015 presidential election by late President Muhammadu Buhari, but the opposition and some Northern politicians had been urging Jonathan to throw his hat into the ring, despite doubts of his eligibility – having been sworn in as president twice.
The PDP, a party deep in crisis, believes that Jonathan’s candidacy may help revive the dying giant, while some Northern politicians are clamouring for him to ensure that power returns to the North after four years, since he would do only a term if he wins.
“I can confirm that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will contest the presidential election in 2027 as PDP candidate,” Prof Jerry Gana confirmed to journalists at the sideline of the PDP State congress in Minna.
He added, “In 2015, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan said his ambition was not worth the blood of Nigerians. After him, another President ruled for eight years and now another has ruled for two years. Nigerians have seen the difference and the difference is very clear. Nigerians are now asking us to bring back our friend, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
“I can confirm that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will contest the presidential election in 2027 as PDP candidate and you will vote for him to return as President again.”
Jonathan had maintain sealed lips over his rumoured ambition, but there are reports that he had been consulting widely.
