The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and the Presidency, had yet to distance themselves from the threat by Chairman of Lagos State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, “to deal with anyone who refuses to vote for APC in 2027.”
Many hours after Sego threatened voters in Lagos State with violence and possible death if they fail to vote for APC in the 2027 elections, both the ruling party and the presidency have maintained a worrying silence, which may be interpreted to mean that he was speaking on their behalf.
The NURTW chairman is an ardent supporter of President Bola Tinubu, and in a viral video, he was heard openly declaring war on anyone who fails to vote for the APC.
He boasted in the video that what happened in 2023 would not be allowed to repeat itself. Recall that President Tinubu was beaten in Lagos, his home state, by Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party in 2023.
In the video, Sego vowed that he and his foot soldiers would severely punish any Lagos resident who dares him and go ahead to vote against the APC, insisting that he has the full backing of the government.
He also berated NURTW members in the Ajeromi/Ifelodun local government area of the state for working with politicians who are not members of the APC, stressing that the union’s full support is for the APC and any other party in the state is a counterfeit.
‘’APC is our party in Lagos state. Another party is a counterfeit. whether you like it or not,” he said in Yoruba.
“We are not shy to say it. What happened in your axis at Ajegunle that you all pretended like nothing happened, if such repeats itself, you will all be suspended.
“Any of your transport workers who misbehaves, suspend him and have the evidence. Nobody dare reinstates such worker. Even in that area that he lives, we will torment them and make them feel hell,
“We don’t joke with APC in Lagos State. Nobody should think that what happened in 2023 will repeat itself in 2027. Anybody who makes any silly mistake and misbehaves in 2027 will be dealt with. Go and let them know that it is APC you will vote,” Sego said.
Recall that on June 17, 2025, a Canadian Judge, Phuong Ngo,in a judgement, called the APC and the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, terrorist organisations.
The 2023 general election in Nigeria was marred by vote rigging, violence and manipulation of results by officials of the electoral umpire, the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC.
