Worshippers Killed As Explosion Hits Maiduguri Mosque In Northeast Nigeria

An explosion that tore through a mosque at Gamborun Market in Maiduguri on Wednesday left some worshippers dead and others severely wounded.

The explosion reportedly occurred while worshippers were gathered for prayers.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the blast, said traders and residents in the area fled the scene as thick smoke billowed from the mosque, while others attempted to assist victims before emergency responders arrived.

However, emergency responders were seen rushing to the scene, while security operatives cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties and conduct a preliminary assessment of the situation.

The exact number of casualities and those injured had not been officially ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

Also no group has claimed responsibility, but troubled Maiduguri had seen suicide bombings and improvised explosive device attacks since Boko Haram insurgency began in Borno state in 2009.
