The Nigerian Senate, led by Godswill Akpabio, has opposed the return of the lawmaker representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, following the expiration of her controversial six months suspension without any legal authority.
Lawyer to the Kogi senator had written to the senate about her intention to return to the red chamber following the expiration of her “illegal suspension.”
But responding in a letter by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, dated September 4, 2025, the Senate claimed, without legal authority, that she cannot resume since the matter is still in court.
According to the Senate, Natasha’s six-month suspension remains in force pending the outcome of a Court of Appeal case instituted against the Senate by her.
“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read in part.
The Senate stated that it would only review her suspension after the court’s pronouncement.
Natasha was suspended, without fair hearing, according to her, after she accused Senate president Akpabio of repeated sexual harassment.
Mr Akpabio denies the accusation, yet the senate had yet to order an independent probe into the weighty allegations against the seante president.
Many believe that Natasha’s suspension was a bid to silence her.
Justice Binta Nyarko of the Federal High Court Abuja had declared Natasha’s suspension as illegal.
The senate under Mr. Akpabio had not shown respect for the rule of law.
The red chamber had rubber-stamped the unconstitutional suspension of Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara and all members of the state legislature by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025.
