Peter Obi, perhaps the most popular Nigerian politicial at the moment; and the influential former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Sunday joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in a move that left members of both the ruling All Progressives Congress and the leading opposition African Democratic Party with dropped jaws.
The move ends weeks of speculation of Obi-Kwankwaso ticket in the 2027 Presidential Election in a country where the political terrain has become slippery and treacherous, allegedly wired with landmines to destroy the opposition.
The opposition parties accuse the APC government of working, through lawful and unlawful means, to turn Nigeria into a one-party. The APC however denies this.
Earlier, Mr Obi had left the ADC, an uncomfortable alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whose perennial presidential ambition was said to be unhelpful to the alliance.
The National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, welcomed Obi and Kwankwaso to the party, describing them as “very handsome suitors.”
Kwankwaso called on supporters and political associates to rally behind the NDC, urging wider participation in the party.
Obi, on his part, reportedly advised party members against resorting to litigation, encouraging internal resolution of disputes.
